Guwahati: The initial phase of panchayat elections in Assam was carried out on Friday across 14 districts, including Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Majuli, Golaghat, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi.
According to the Assam State Election Commission, voter turnout varied across districts, with Tinsukia recording 64.71%, Dibrugarh 68%, Charaideo 71.02%, Sivasagar 72.56%, Majuli 80.02%, Jorhat 72.15%, Golaghat 69.92%, Dhemaji 77.14%, Lakhimpur 71%, Sonitpur 61%, Biswanath 64.51%, Cachar 73%, Hailakandi 73.5%, and Sribhumi 64.10%. The overall voter turnout for this phase stood at 70.19%.
The Election Commission announced that re-polling would be held at 43 polling stations due to disturbances—31 stations in Hailakandi, 8 in Sribhumi, 2 in Lakhimpur, and one each in Golaghat and Majuli.
The Assam State Election Commission stated that the first phase of the 2025 Panchayat elections concluded peacefully, apart from some stations where untoward incidents occurred. The second phase is scheduled for May 7 across the remaining 13 districts, with vote counting set for May 11.
The Commission assured that all necessary measures were taken to ensure free and fair elections.
