Guwahati: On January 3, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma convened a meeting in Guwahati with MPs and MLAs from the BJP and its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), to discuss the state’s development.

The gathering included BJP ministers and focused on ensuring that welfare schemes effectively reach the intended beneficiaries. In a post on X, CM Sarma stated, “Today in Lok Sewa Bhawan, I had a detailed discussion with NDA MPs, MLAs, and Chief Executives of all autonomous councils to ensure that our welfare schemes reach the last mile.”

Sarma emphasized the positive impact of the BJP’s “double-engine government” at both the central and state levels on Assam’s development. He noted that, thanks to the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, over 9 lakh residents in Assam had their Aadhaar biometrics unlocked in 2024, facilitating easier access to government services.

Previously, Sarma highlighted that many individuals were unable to obtain Aadhaar cards due to locked biometrics during the National Register of Citizens (NRC) updating process. This situation hindered their access to scholarships and other government benefits. To address this, a cabinet sub-committee was established to investigate the issue.

The committee concluded that there was no connection between Aadhaar cards and the NRC, leading to the decision that these 9 lakh individuals should receive their Aadhaar cards. After two years of discussions with the central government, a resolution was reached to provide Aadhaar cards to 935,642 people, with the UIDAI authority being notified accordingly.
