Guwahati: The Indian Navy divers are continuing their rescue efforts at a coal mine in the Umrangso region of Assam’s Dima Hasao district, where at least eight laborers remain trapped, officials reported on Thursday.
A senior district official stated that the divers entered the mine this morning after inspecting various tunnels using Remote Operating Vehicles (ROVs). They are working to locate the trapped workers.
Harmeet Singh, the Special DGP of Assam Police overseeing the rescue operation, explained, “The tunnel has been de-watered; however, there are channels that are allowing water to flow back into it. We are using small pumps to remove water while the navy divers explore the tunnels for rescue. So far, they have not spotted any individuals.”
Singh added that the Indian Navy team is employing advanced equipment to navigate the mine’s various tunnels. In the meantime, the body of one laborer who was trapped has been recovered and sent to Haflong for a post-mortem before being returned to the family.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that para divers recovered the body of one trapped laborer. He expressed condolences on X, stating, “21 Para divers have retrieved a lifeless body from the base of the well. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family.”
The Chief Minister also noted that the rescue operation is ongoing with personnel from the army and the NDRF involved.
Among those trapped in the coal mine, which includes nine identified laborers, one is from Nepal, one from West Bengal, and the others are from various regions of Assam. The laborers have been identified as Ganga Bahadur Shreth, Hussain Ali, Jakir Hussain, Sarpa Barman, Mustafa Seikh, Khusi Mohan Rai, Sanjit Sarkar, Lijan Magar, and Sarat Goyary.
