Bengaluru: The Bajrang Dal has approached local authorities, urging the implementation of a rule to prohibit unmarried couples from checking into Oyo hotels in Bengaluru.

The proposal was submitted to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner Tushar Girinath and Bengaluru City Police Commissioner B. Dayananda by a group of Bajrang Dal activists, led by former District Convenor Tejas A. Gowda, on Wednesday.

Oyo has recently enforced this rule in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, and plans to extend it to other cities across the country following petitions against accommodating unmarried couples.

Bajrang Dal’s petition further calls for similar restrictions in other types of accommodations, such as homestays, lodges, service apartments, and hotels, raising concerns that such venues might facilitate unlawful activities.

Gowda emphasized that areas considered central to Bengaluru, like Shantinagar, BTM Layout, Jayanagar, and Bommanahalli, allow young men and women to live together in PGs (Paying Guest accommodations) under the guise of cohabitation. He criticized this as a Western influence and contended that the culture in India traditionally does not support such arrangements, suggesting that proper permissions from authorities have not been obtained. He expressed frustration that police and BBMP officials seem indifferent to these practices.

This proposal is expected to spark significant discussion within the state.
