Dhaka: A court in Bangladesh has once again denied bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das, a Hindu priest and spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote, who is affiliated with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). Das is currently in jail facing sedition charges.

On December 11, Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md. Saiful Islam, who is on vacation, ruled against the bail request, noting that Das did not have an attorney present to represent him. His case is now scheduled for a hearing on January 2 of next year. The petition for bail argues that Das, suffering from diabetes and respiratory issues, is wrongfully accused. It also pointed out that his lawyer, Subhashish Sharma, was unable to attend the hearing on December 3 due to security concerns.

Public Prosecutor Mofizul Haque Bhuiyan stated that lawyer Rabindra Ghosh, who had filed for Das’s bail, lacked the necessary power of attorney, and without Sharma present, the application was rejected. The court also had to postpone hearings for two other defendants in the case due to lawyer absences.

India has expressed hopes for a fair and transparent trial for Das, emphasizing the need for the Bangladeshi authorities to protect the rights of Hindus and other minorities in the country. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, highlighted concerns over rising extremist violence against minorities, urging that the interim government uphold its duty to safeguard all communities. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri raised these safety concerns during a visit to Dhaka, emphasizing the need for a constructive dialogue between the two nations.
