Kolkata: A senior BJP leader from West Bengal has accused the West Bengal Police of unnecessarily alarming the public regarding the upcoming Ram Navami festival.

Dilip Ghosh, former national vice-president of the BJP and ex-Lok Sabha member, criticized the police’s decision to cancel the leaves of all officers, with the exception of emergency cases, from April 2-9 as unwarranted. He remarked, “Such panic-driven decisions occur only during Hindu festivals. The police should focus on those who create disturbances. Hindus are organized and conduct their religious practices peacefully. Millions participate in Durga Puja without any problems. It has become a pattern for the ruling party to instigate tension.”

Ghosh expressed confidence that there would be no untoward incidents during the Ram Navami processions if the police effectively manage those seeking to create unrest on the occasion.

Last week, two senior West Bengal Police officials informed the media that they had received specific intelligence regarding attempts by certain vested interests to incite violence during the upcoming Ram Navami celebrations. They indicated that there were plans to provoke unrest through various posters and online posts. Additional Director General (South Bengal) Supratim Sarkar stated on March 29, “The police are on high alert. Attempts may be made to stir tensions among different communities, particularly regarding Ram Navami. We have urged people not to be provoked but to notify local authorities of any suspicious activities.”

Concerns about communal clashes have arisen, particularly from Mothabari in Malda district.

Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, also stated that this year’s Ram Navami would witness around 2,000 rallies, both large and small. He noted that participation in these rallies is expected to double compared to last year. “This year, Ram Navami will be celebrated on a grand scale. I will be on the streets that day. Last year, approximately 50 lakh Hindus participated in the rallies, with around 1,000 rallies held. This year, we expect 2,000 rallies and around one crore Hindus to join the celebrations,” he asserted.
