Kolkata: In the cash-for-school-job case in West Bengal, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has confiscated assets totaling Rs 239.26 crore, including cash, gold, and properties. This includes the attachment of properties both within West Bengal and outside the state.

The latest major confiscation, according to an ED statement, involves commercial properties in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, and land and buildings in Malda district, West Bengal, valued at Rs 8.20 crore. These assets were linked to M/s ND Infosystems Pvt. Ltd, a company controlled by Niladri Das, his family, Abdul Khalek, and his family. Additionally, land worth Rs 46.13 lakh, registered under the names of Chandan Mondal and his wife, has also been seized.

On January 2, the process of framing charges in the case was delayed for the second time that week at a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Kolkata. The delay occurred because the prime accused, Sujay Krishna Bhadra, could not be presented in court due to hospitalization. As per regulations, charge framing cannot proceed without the physical presence of all accused individuals.

So far, the ED has named 29 individuals and 24 corporate entities or trusts in its charge sheets. Key figures include former Education Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Partha Chatterjee, Trinamool legislator Manik Bhattacharya, and Chatterjee’s close associate Arpita Mukherjee, who was involved in the recovery of large sums of cash and gold in July 2022. Chatterjee’s son-in-law, Kalyan Moy Bhattacharya, and the Babli Chatterjee Memorial Trust, named after his late wife, are also among those accused.
