Gangtok: To celebrate the cultural heritage of Sikkim’s Makar Sankranti, known locally as Maghey Mela, MLA Madan Cintury officially launched a bike rally at the Jorethang Football Stadium on Friday.
Organized by the Makar Sankranti or Maghe Sankranti Mela Committee, the rally aims to elevate the festival into a significant cultural event. About 65 bikers from Sikkim and nearby states participated, showcasing the regional enthusiasm for the occasion.
The bikers set off from Jorethang, traversing culturally rich areas like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Melli, before returning to the starting point.
Traditionally linked to fairs, community gatherings, and religious practices, the Maghey Sankranti Mela has transformed into a grand event that blends spirituality with cultural festivities.
An official remarked, “This initiative led by the Mela Committee highlights our commitment to preserving and promoting Sikkim’s cultural heritage while boosting tourism and regional unity. We expect the bike rally to generate excitement for the upcoming Maghey Sankranti Mela 2025, ensuring its legacy for future generations.”
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang previously emphasized the need to elevate the Maghey Mela, aiming to enhance the status of both the event and the town of Jorethang. He urged people to celebrate the festival traditionally while also introducing contemporary entertainment elements to draw a larger crowd.
One major proposal includes organizing a full day of rural sports and festivities between the event’s opening and closing days, including traditional activities like high jumping, cycling, pillow fighting, and tug-of-war, alongside additional attractions for locals and visitors.
Tamang also underscored the importance of cultural events held throughout the day to honor Sikkim’s rich traditions and heritage.
Maghey Sankranti is set to be celebrated on January 14.
