Bhopal: On the occasion of Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate two museums dedicated to tribal freedom fighters in Madhya Pradesh today.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced that the museums, located in Chhindwara and Jabalpur districts, will be dedicated to the nation. The Chhindwara museum honors local tribal hero Badal Bhoi, while the Jabalpur museum is named after Raja Shankar Shah and Raghunath Shah.

Both museums, curated by the state’s Tribal Affairs Department, will showcase the lives of 25 tribal freedom fighters, including notable figures like Birsa Munda, Raja Shankar Shah, and Raghunath Shah. The area surrounding the museums features many significant sites related to the tribal freedom struggle.

The Jabalpur museum comprises six galleries, one of which is focused on Rani Durgavati, highlighting her life, reign, and battles against external threats.

To honor Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary, the Madhya Pradesh government has organized state-level celebrations in Dhar and Shahdol districts. Tribal artists will perform traditional arts to commemorate Munda, who is revered as a deity by many.

In addition to celebrating Munda’s legacy, the state government will also pay tribute to local freedom fighters and their families, recognizing the rich heritage and contributions of tribal communities.

Birsa Munda, a key figure in the Indian tribal freedom struggle, inspired the tribal population of the Chotanagpur region to resist British rule through the armed uprising known as “Ulgulan” (the Great Rebellion). He was a member of the Munda tribe from the Chhotanagpur Plateau and led a mass movement against the British, who were seizing tribal lands and pushing them into poverty.

Munda emphasized the importance of land ownership and rights, founding the Birsait faith, which combined animism with indigenous beliefs and promoted the worship of a single deity. He was affectionately called ‘Dharti Aba’ or ‘father of the earth’ and passed away at the young age of 25 on June 9, 1900.

In 2021, the Modi government declared November 15, Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary, as ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Divas’ (Tribal Pride Day).
