New Delhi: This past weekend in the national capital was marked by violence, with a businessman shot dead while out for a morning walk and a man succumbing to stab wounds inflicted by his neighbors late Friday night.
The murder took place in Shahdara’s Vishwas Nagar, where unidentified assailants on a motorcycle fired nine rounds at Sunil Jain (52), who owned a utensil shop, as he returned home from his daily exercise near the Yamuna Sports Complex. Despite being rushed to the hospital in critical condition, he was declared dead upon arrival.
Police reported that Sunil sustained three to four bullet wounds, and forensic teams recovered several bullet casings at the scene. DCP Shahdara, Prashant Gautam, confirmed that a Police Control Room alert was received at 8:36 A.M., indicating that two men on a motorcycle shot a man before fleeing. Authorities are analyzing CCTV footage to identify the suspects, though the motive for the attack remains unknown. The incident has heightened fear and insecurity in the area.
In a separate incident in Govindpuri, a man named Sudheer died from stab wounds sustained during a brawl over the cleanliness of a shared toilet just after midnight on Friday. Sudheer, along with his brother Prem and their friend Sagar, was taken to AIIMS, where Sudheer succumbed to injuries inflicted with a kitchen knife. The other two are receiving treatment. Police have detained three individuals, including a minor, in connection with the incident.
These violent events have sparked growing concerns about public safety and law enforcement effectiveness in Delhi. The rising crime rates are expected to intensify political debates, particularly as the Delhi Police operates under the jurisdiction of the Union Home Ministry, and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is likely to spotlight this issue in the upcoming Assembly elections.
