Bengaluru: Former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what he described as a “bold decision” to introduce the One Nation, One Election system through a constitutional amendment. He criticized opponents of the initiative, arguing that they are hindering the nation’s development.
In a media briefing in New Delhi, Bommai stated that the Union Cabinet, under PM Modi’s guidance, has approved the proposal for a constitutional amendment to implement this system, which he mentioned could be presented during the current parliamentary session.
Bommai emphasized the significance of this initiative, saying that frequent elections impede the country’s progress. He noted that elections at various levels—from cooperative bodies to panchayat, assembly, and Lok Sabha elections—create a perpetual election atmosphere that incurs substantial costs and disrupts developmental efforts.
He argued that the One Nation, One Election framework would provide governance stability essential for development, noting that no other nation experiences elections as frequently. He highlighted that this issue has been discussed for decades, but the Prime Minister’s decision is a courageous step with potential long-term benefits.
Bommai mentioned that the proposal follows recommendations from a committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind and urged citizens to support the initiative, claiming that those against it are motivated by political interests rather than the nation’s advancement.
He congratulated Prime Minister Modi for taking this significant step.
In response, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Congress leader D.K. Shivakumar accused the move of aiming to weaken regional parties. Speaking in Vijayapura, he claimed, “This is a tactic to eliminate smaller parties,” asserting that the BJP is concerned about the rising influence of regional parties like the Trinamool Congress and various parties in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
Shivakumar further alleged that the BJP’s agenda aims to secure a two-thirds majority in Parliament and criticized the timing of the decision, given that some state governments were recently elected while others were elected a few years ago. He confirmed that the Congress party would align with the national leadership’s position on this issue, as expressed by Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
