A major accident took place at Porbandar Coast Guard Airport, where a helicopter crashed in the Coast Guard’s air enclave. 3 people are reported dead in the incident while many are reported injured. The injured were immediately taken to the civil hospital for treatment.
An Indian Coast Guard helicopter crashed in Porbandar, Gujarat at 12 noon on Sunday. 3 people died in the accident. According to news agency ANI, the Coast Guard helicopter Dhruv was on a regular flight.
The helicopter crashed while landing at the Porbandar airstrip. The helicopter caught fire as soon as it fell.
On September 2 last year, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG)’s Advanced Light Helicopter (Dhruv) fell into the Arabian Sea near the Porbandar coast. During this, one of the 4 crew members aboard the helicopter was rescued, while 3 crew members went missing.
Sharing details of the incident, Porbandar Superintendent of Police (SP) Bhagirath Singh Jadeja said, “This accident happened during routine work when this helicopter was landing on the runway. There were three people on board. All three people were rescued and sent to the hospital but all three could not be saved. This was a lightweight helicopter of the Coast Guard.”
This latest crash raises fresh concerns about the ALH Dhruv fleet, which is operated by the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Two years ago, design and metallurgy flaws were identified in certain components of the helicopter. A safety audit was conducted following a spate of accidents, prompting the temporary grounding of the fleet for comprehensive technical checks. The ALH Dhruv fleet, comprising over 325 helicopters across various branches of the armed forces, resumed operations after passing the safety audit. However, incidents like these continue to cast a shadow over the reliability of the platform.
