Rio de Janeiro, July 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that not condemning all forms of terrorism in clear terms is a betrayal of humanity. He was speaking during the session on peace and security at the BRICS summit.

Terrorism should always be condemned

PM Modi said that terrorism is the biggest threat to humanity today. He said, “Condemnation of terrorism should be based on principles, not convenience.” If we decide to react on the basis of where and who is attacked by terrorists, it is a betrayal of humanity.

Strong action is necessary, not just words

He said that strict measures should be taken against terrorists, like imposing sanctions on them. “Victims of terrorism and those who support terrorism cannot be considered the same. Keeping silent or supporting terrorism for political or personal gain should never be acceptable,” he said.

Challenge to BRICS: There should be uniformity in words and deeds

Prime Minister Modi challenged the BRICS countries that there should be no difference between their words and deeds on the issue of terrorism. “If we are not able to do this, then the question arises whether we are really serious against terrorism?”

Development is not possible without peace

Modi said that the progress of humanity is possible only when there is peace and security in the world. “BRICS can make a big contribution to this. We have to face global challenges together,” he said.

Concern over rising tensions in the world

He expressed concern over tensions and conflicts spreading from West Asia to Europe. PM Modi described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as a matter of grave concern, but did not name any party.

However, the BRICS joint statement named Israel and expressed concern over attacks on Gaza and obstacles in delivering relief material. The statement also demanded the release of all hostages and prisoners held in violation of international law, but did not name Hamas.

India believes in non-violence and peace

PM Modi said that India is the land of Lord Buddha and Mahatma Gandhi. “We do not believe in war and violence. India supports every effort that takes the world away from confrontation and towards dialogue, cooperation and trust.”

India ready to partner with every friendly country

At the end of his speech, PM Modi said that India is ready to work together with all friendly countries for peace and security.
