Amritsar, Punjab: The number of districts affected by floods in Punjab has increased to 8. These include Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Ferozepur and Fazilka. The effect of floods is now visible in Patiala and Mansa as well.
Due to the overflow of Ghaggar river, the fields of some villages in Patiala have been flooded. On Saturday, the water level in Sutlej, Ravi and Ghaggar is rising. There is a flood alert in Jalandhar due to the rising water in Sutlej. The roof of a house collapsed in Abohar. But there was no loss of life.
In view of the devastation in Jammu, about 47 trains passing through Punjab have been completely cancelled. This will affect the people of Punjab, Jammu and Haryana the most.
Sutlej is in spate in Fazilka. Water has started flowing over the bridge built on the river in Sarhadi village here. Special DGP Arpit Shukla said that 20 army helicopters have been deployed for rescue.
Authorities on Alert
Punjab Police, Indian Army, Border Security Force (BSF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and civil administration are jointly engaged in relief and rescue operations.
So far 23 people have died in the floods in Punjab while 3 are still missing. According to a government spokesperson, so far 7,689 people trapped in the floods have been evacuated and taken to safer places.
At the same time, water has been removed from Gurudwara Shri Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan. Cleaning work is going on here after the order of Pakistan’s Punjab province Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
