Berlin: A car drove into a Christmas market in Magdeburg, central Germany, killing at least two people, including an adult and a child, and injuring more than 60 others, according to Saxony-Anhalt’s state premier. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his condolences to the victims and their families on social media.

The suspected driver, a Saudi Arabian doctor residing in Germany since 2006, has been arrested. The state premier mentioned that 15 of the injured are in serious condition, and the death toll could rise. Witnesses reported that the car, a black BMW, moved in a zigzag pattern through the market, traveling approximately 400 meters and striking numerous people around 7:04 p.m.

Emergency services quickly responded to the scene after the market, located near the city hall, was closed. Magdeburg has a population of around 237,000 and is about 150 km west of Berlin. This incident recalls a similar attack from December 19, 2016, when a truck attack at a Berlin Christmas market resulted in 12 deaths and over 70 injuries.
