Ahead of Diwali, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced a significant benefit for doctors in Himachal Pradesh. Following his directives, the State Government will now exempt doctors engaged in PG courses, Senior Residency (SRship), or DM-level studies from the restrictions of study leave. Previously, a Cabinet decision mandated a salary reduction to 40% for those on study leave, negatively impacting doctors pursuing advanced studies. Under the new arrangement, doctors enrolled in PG courses will receive their full salaries, and their time spent studying will be considered as time on duty.
The Chief Minister stated, “Postgraduate medical students in Himachal Pradesh will now receive their complete salaries while they pursue their studies. These doctors juggle patient care and education, which is essential for their professional development and the state’s healthcare system. By ensuring they receive full pay, the government aims to support their commitment, ultimately improving both the quality of training and healthcare services available to the public. This move is expected to enhance patient outcomes and strengthen the healthcare system, benefiting communities across Himachal Pradesh.”
This decision follows a recent meeting where a group of medical officers brought their concerns to the Chief Minister’s attention. Sukhu assured them of prompt action and directed health department officials to address the issue. True to his promise, the State Government has approved the payment of full salaries for doctors pursuing PG courses.
The Himachal Medical Officers’ Association has expressed strong support for the government’s decision to offer full salaries to doctors in postgraduate programs. Association President Dr. Rajesh noted, “This tackles a significant concern for doctors, as the previous policy of only providing 40% of their salary was discouraging. The Chief Minister’s quick and compassionate response has greatly uplifted our morale. We are sincerely grateful to him for acknowledging and addressing this matter.” This decision reflects the Chief Minister’s vision of strengthening healthcare in Himachal Pradesh by empowering doctors through quality education, ultimately enhancing healthcare services in the state. Furthermore, this initiative will aid in developing a robust healthcare network throughout the state, as doctors will serve in government health facilities after completing their PG studies, thereby improving the overall healthcare infrastructure.
