Seoul: South Korea is experiencing its coldest weather of the season, with temperatures in Seoul and northern regions falling below -10 degrees Celsius.
As of 8 a.m., the temperature in Seoul reached a low of -10.2 degrees Celsius, with the apparent temperature dropping to -16.7 degrees Celsius, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).
A cold wave advisory was issued for all of Seoul at 9 p.m. the previous night, triggered by expectations of morning lows below -12 degrees Celsius for two or more consecutive days.
Other regions reported even lower temperatures, including -16.9 degrees Celsius at the Daegwallyeong mountain pass in Gangwon Province, -13.6 degrees Celsius in Cheorwon, and -13 degrees Celsius in Cheonan. Further south, Gwangju recorded -6.8 degrees Celsius, Ulsan -6.1 degrees Celsius, and Busan -4.7 degrees Celsius.
The KMA noted that some mountainous areas in Gangwon saw temperatures dip below -20 degrees Celsius, while central regions and northern areas of North Jeolla Province experienced temperatures between -15 degrees Celsius and -10 degrees Celsius. Most of the country recorded its lowest temperatures of the winter.
The cold snap is expected to persist, with Thursday’s highs projected to be between 3 degrees Celsius and 11 degrees Celsius, and much of the country remaining below freezing throughout the day. Snow is anticipated in the South Chungcheong and Jeolla provinces, as well as the mountainous regions of Jeju Island, with snowfall rates reaching up to 5 centimeters per hour at times.
