Earlier in morning, The remains of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh were brought to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters on Saturday morning, where senior Congress leaders and party workers gathered to pay their last respects to their esteemed leader.
Notable Congress figures, including Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rajya Sabha MP Sonia Gandhi, and MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, attended the event to honor Dr. Singh.
His last rites will be held with full state honors at Nigam Bodh Ghat, a public cremation site in Delhi. President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other senior officials are expected to attend the funeral later today.
Dr. Singh’s remains will be on display at the Congress headquarters to allow party members and supporters to pay their respects. Following this, his final journey to the cremation ground will begin.
According to sources, “Dr. Manmohan Singh’s final journey to the heavenly abode will commence from AICC HQ to the cremation ground after 9:30 AM on Saturday.”
In honor of his passing, a half-day holiday has been declared for all Central Government offices and CPSUs.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, who served as India’s 14th Prime Minister and was celebrated as a distinguished economist, died at the age of 92 at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi on Thursday night.
Regarded as the “architect of India’s economic reforms,” Dr. Singh led the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government from 2004 to 2014.
To commemorate his legacy, a seven-day national mourning period has been declared, lasting until January 1, 2025. During this time, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast across the country and at Indian missions abroad.
The Congress party has canceled all official events, including its Foundation Day celebrations, during this mourning period, with activities set to resume on January 3.
A controversy has emerged over the location for Dr. Singh’s memorial, with Congress leaders criticizing the decision to hold the last rites at Nigam Bodh Ghat, rather than a site suitable for a memorial. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has reportedly discussed with Prime Minister Modi the possibility of establishing a memorial at the cremation site.
The Centre has confirmed that a memorial will be created but noted that forming a trust and designating space will take time. In the meantime, the cremation and related formalities will proceed as planned.
Dr. Singh’s death has prompted tributes from across the political spectrum, highlighting his significant contributions to shaping modern India’s economic and political landscape.
