Ludhiana, August 12: A couple from Sangrur climbed an overhead water tank at Ishmeet Singh Chowk in Model Town Extension, Ludhiana, on Monday, protesting against an immigration service provider.
The couple, identified as Hardeep Singh and Amandeep Kaur from Dhuri, claimed they were defrauded of Rs 10 lakhs by Globalway Immigration Services, who had promised to secure them visas to England.
According to Hardeep’s brother, Lakhwinder Singh, the total deal was settled for Rs 26 lakhs, with an advance payment of Rs 10 lakhs made via RTGS in February this year. However, the service provider allegedly kept delaying the process and making excuses when approached for updates on the visa.
Lakhwinder also alleged that the company had hired bouncers who misbehaved with them. He said they had filed a complaint with the Commissioner of Police, Ludhiana, which was forwarded to the Sangrur police. The Sadar Dhuri police summoned the immigration service provider, but the company representatives failed to appear.
Lakhwinder added that no action has been taken against the company, which has also refused to refund the advance payment. On Monday, when the couple visited the office of Globalway Immigration Services near Ishmeet Singh Chowk, the officials allegedly refused to return the money and misbehaved with them, prompting the couple to climb the overhead water tank adjacent to the office building.
After receiving information about the incident, police arrived at the scene and are currently trying to bring the couple down safely.
