Chennai: The Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority (TNSDMA) has dispatched three disaster relief teams to Chennai and 13 teams to other districts impacted by Cyclone Fengal.
In light of the heavy rains, the TNSDMA has advised residents to refrain from visiting beaches, amusement parks, and other recreational venues.
To mitigate the effects of the severe weather, the Tamil Nadu Revenue and Disaster Management Department has set up 2,229 relief centers in areas under heavy rain alerts.
Currently, 471 individuals from 164 families have been moved to relief camps in the Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts. Authorities are ready to carry out further evacuations if needed.
In a public safety notice, the state government has recommended that IT companies allow employees to work from home.
Public transport services along East Coast Road (ECR) and Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) were temporarily halted starting Saturday afternoon.
Residents are strongly urged to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary. Parks and beaches in Chennai and nearby districts will be closed today.
The Mayor of Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), R. Priya, has assured the public of the civic body’s readiness to handle the cyclone and the accompanying heavy rainfall.
The GCC has warned against parking or standing vehicles under trees during the storms.
Several subways in the city, including RBI Subway, Sundaram Point, Rangarajapuram, Palavanthangal, and Gengu Reddy, have been closed due to flooding. Light vehicles are also banned from Duraiswamy and Madley subways. Roads such as Prakasam Salai, G.P. Road, Ritherdon Road, and Alagappa Road have been shut down.
Chennai and its surrounding areas are currently experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall as a result of Cyclone Fengal, with the GCC reporting water accumulation in 12 subways across the city.
