New Delhi: Delhi is currently facing a sharp decline in temperatures due to a cold wave and unfavorable weather conditions. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the temperature dropped to 6.4 degrees Celsius at 5:30 a.m. on Thursday.
The IMD forecasts that the minimum temperature for the day will be about 5 degrees Celsius, with a maximum reaching around 21 degrees Celsius. This morning’s temperature marks a drop of 8 to 11 degrees Celsius compared to previous days.
The IMD has also warned of “dense fog” in the area, although contrasting reports of visibility have emerged from different parts of the city.
Amidst the cold wave, many homeless individuals have taken refuge in night shelters, with facilities on Lodhi Road fully occupied. The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has set up 235 pagoda tents for the homeless, along with night shelters at various locations like AIIMS, Lodhi Road, and the Nizamuddin flyover.
On another note, Delhi’s air quality has dipped to poor levels, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 299 at 7 a.m., as reported by the Central Pollution Control Board. The AQI scale categorizes levels from 0-50 as ‘good’ to 401-500 as ‘severe.’
Recently, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) lifted the Stage-III actions of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR due to a significant improvement in air quality. However, the Stage-I and Stage-II measures will remain in effect, following a review of air quality data and forecasts from the IMD/IITM, which indicated a downward trend in AQI levels.
