Srinagar: An IndiGo flight en route from Delhi to Srinagar on Wednesday evening encountered a severe hailstorm mid-air, resulting in visible damage to the aircraft’s nose cone. The flight, 6E2142, carrying 227 passengers and crew, landed safely at the Srinagar International Airport at around 6:30 PM.
According to aviation officials, the Airbus A320 aircraft ran into extreme turbulence caused by a hailstorm during its descent into Srinagar. The pilot issued an emergency alert to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) in Srinagar before executing a safe landing.
“No injuries were reported. The aircraft sustained damage to the radome (nose cone), which was later declared Aircraft on Ground (AOG) for inspection and repair,” said a spokesperson from IndiGo.
Passengers onboard the flight reported panic and chaos during the turbulence. Several videos circulated on social media showed the aircraft shaking violently, with luggage falling from overhead bins.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to look into the incident. Weather authorities confirmed hailstorm activity over parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday evening.
