Varanasi: Spiritual leader Devkinandan Thakur has reached out to the United Nations, advocating for a separate nation for Hindus in Bangladesh if the UN cannot guarantee their safety. His request follows the recent detention of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a key spokesperson for the Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote, who was arrested on sedition charges after allegations from ex-BNP leader Firoze Khan regarding disrespect towards Bangladesh’s national flag.
The court has denied bail for Das, igniting protests in cities such as Dhaka and Chattogram. Thakur expressed his disappointment with the UN’s silence on the issue, emphasizing the violence against Hindus, including attacks on women and children, as well as the beating of Das’ lawyers. He remarked, “The UN was established to protect humanity; its inaction is concerning.”
Calling for international intervention, Thakur emphasized the sacrifices made by Hindus during Bangladesh’s creation, stating, “I will not tolerate cruelty towards them.” The legal situation for Chinmoy Krishna Das is ongoing, with the next hearing scheduled for January 2, 2025, during which he will stay in custody facing sedition charges.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has condemned the denial of bail for Das, and the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has raised alarms over the recent detention of its members, including two monks and Das’ secretary.
Amid escalating tensions, there is a petition to ban ISKCON in Bangladesh, accusing the organization of inciting communal unrest, further exacerbating the situation. ISKCON’s Vice President in Kolkata, Radharaman, has called for increased protection for Das’ legal representatives following recent attacks on a previous advocate.
