New Delhi: In an encounter in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, four Maoists were killed, and a police officer, Sannu Karam, a head constable with the District Reserve Guard (DRG), also lost his life. The clash occurred on Saturday evening in a forest area of south Abujhmaad while security forces were conducting an anti-Maoist operation.
After the exchange of fire concluded, the bodies of the four Maoists were recovered, along with automatic weapons, including an AK-47 and a self-loading rifle. A search operation is currently underway in the vicinity.
This incident comes shortly after Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, where he addressed surrendered Maoists. He assured them of the government’s commitment to their rehabilitation and urged efforts to eliminate Maoism from the region. Shah highlighted the importance of providing opportunities for those involved in armed movements to surrender and reintegrate into society.
He mentioned that under the Prime Minister’s leadership, significant progress had been made, citing 20 peace accords signed in the northeast and the surrender of 9,000 militants. The government has also initiated housing plans for surrendered Maoists and support through livestock provision to aid their livelihoods.
Reflecting on the fight against Maoism in Bastar, Shah noted that while progress has been made, non-violent solutions are necessary for peace, emphasizing the development of a comprehensive Naxal rehabilitation policy aimed at integrating former rebels into mainstream society.
In 2024, over 200 Maoists were reported killed, while more than 800 were arrested, and around 802 chose to surrender.
