Mumbai: Govinda, one of the most prominent stars in Bollywood, has had a remarkable career, particularly in the 1990s, with massive hits like Coolie No. 1, Raja Babu, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, and Hero No. 1. Despite his stardom, his journey was not without struggles. His wife, Sunita, has now opened up about the challenges they faced, particularly when it came to financial matters and dealings with producers.
In a candid interview with Hauterrfly, Sunita shared how she often acted as Govinda’s manager, overseeing his work and finances, and how producers frequently took advantage of her husband’s kind nature.
Sunita recounted how, despite being owed substantial amounts of money, Govinda would often downplay the situation, choosing to let it slide with the belief that perhaps the shows hadn’t been successful. However, Sunita was determined to stand up for him, confronting producers and demanding they pay what was rightfully owed. “Why so? ‘You danced! Didn’t you? You worked hard! They’re fooling you, and I can see it,’” she said, recalling her firm stance in such situations.
She further explained how producers would sometimes exploit Govinda’s generosity, claiming they couldn’t pay him immediately because the shows had underperformed. “Chichi Bhaiya, the tickets didn’t sell. I’ll pay you your Rs 20-25 lakh later,” they would say. But Sunita wouldn’t allow this, quickly calling them out. “Who are you trying to fool? I was there, and I saw the house was full,” she asserted, standing firm on her husband’s behalf.
Govinda, who was last seen in the 2019 film Rangeela Raja, has since moved into politics. Recently, he made headlines after an unfortunate incident where he accidentally shot and injured his foot with his licensed revolver.
