Agartala: The Government Railway Police (GRP) has arrested 35 individuals involved in human trafficking in Tripura in the last five months, targeting the illegal entry of Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingya migrants into India, officials reported on Monday.
According to officials, the arrests were made at various locations across Tripura. Most recently, on Sunday night, five human traffickers were apprehended in Konaban, Sepahijala district, with the assistance of the Border Security Force (BSF).
Since August 1, the GRP has detained more than 115 Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas at Agartala railway station and other areas. Alongside the GRP, the Tripura police and BSF have also captured numerous human traffickers throughout the state.
In total, around 600 Bangladeshi nationals and over 63 Rohingyas have been arrested by the GRP and other security forces in Tripura during this five-month period following their illegal entry into India. Last year, the BSF alone apprehended 55 Rohingya migrants, 620 Bangladeshi nationals, and 260 Indian individuals, including human traffickers, in various operations.
The infiltration from Bangladesh has surged since unrest began in the country in July, particularly following the fall of the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government on August 5. Many of the Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas arrested expressed their intent to travel to major cities in India in search of employment.
The Rohingyas fled camps in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar, where over a million displaced individuals from Myanmar have been residing since 2017. In response to the escalating unrest in Bangladesh, the BSF has increased its operations along the 856 km India-Bangladesh border in Tripura to curb infiltration, exfiltration, and cross-border crimes, including smuggling. The BSF has successfully thwarted numerous attempts by hundreds of Bangladeshi nationals, including both Hindus and Muslims, to cross the border illegally.
