Mumbai: Guneet Monga Kapoor is set to make her third appearance at the Oscars with the live-action short film Anuja, which has been shortlisted for the Best Live Action Short Film category. While Laapataa Ladies did not make it to the Oscars race, Anuja keeps India’s hopes alive.

Guneet has an impressive track record at the Academy Awards. Her previous production, Period. End of Sentence, won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Subject in 2019, and in 2023, The Elephant Whisperers won Best Documentary Short Film.

Anuja tells the poignant story of a 9-year-old girl, Anuja, who works with her older sister, Palak, in a garment factory in New Delhi. When a teacher offers Anuja a chance to attend a prestigious boarding school, she faces a life-changing decision that will impact both her and her sister’s future.

Expressing her pride over the recognition, Guneet Monga Kapoor said, “Being shortlisted for the Oscars is a moment of immense pride. Anuja is a deeply personal story about two sisters, highlighting the resilience of the human spirit. It’s been an honor to contribute as an executive producer and to work with the talented filmmakers Adam J. Graves and Suchitra Mattai, along with the powerful performances of Sajda Pathan and Ananya Shanbhag. This recognition reflects the dedication of our team and the strength of the story.”

Director Adam J. Graves added, “It’s an immense honor to be part of this list of remarkable films. Anuja is a product of a collaboration with many talented and passionate individuals, especially our stars, Sajda and Ananya. Knowing that the film resonates emotionally with audiences while addressing the issue of child labor is truly gratifying.”
