Mumbai: Filmmaker Anurag Basu has drawn a comparison between the Hindi and Korean film industries, referring to both as “young” but highlighting a significant difference. In a recent interview, Basu stated that while Indian cinema is gaining recognition in global circles, it still primarily caters to the Indian diaspora. In contrast, Korean films have successfully captured a worldwide audience, making them more prominent on the international stage. He pointed out that mainstream Indian cinema remains focused on domestic success rather than global reach.
Basu expressed that Indian films are largely viewed by Indian audiences, with only a small group of global cinephiles showing interest. “We are as young as the Korean film industry, but they have a global audience. People around the world watch their films, while our films are primarily watched by Indians,” he said. The director also criticised Bollywood’s obsession with box office numbers, saying that the industry is too focused on weekend earnings rather than global storytelling.
On the work front, Basu is currently occupied with two major projects. His much-anticipated romantic drama Aashiqui 3, starring Kartik Aaryan, is still in pre-production, with filming set to begin next month. Meanwhile, he is also working on Metro In Dino, a sequel to his 2007 film Life in a Metro. The anthology film, featuring a star-studded cast including Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Pankaj Tripathi, and Konkona Sen Sharma, was initially scheduled for release in November 2024 but has been delayed, with a new release date yet to be announced.
