Punjab: A sudden and severe storm accompanied by heavy rainfall hit several parts of Punjab, including Gurdaspur and Amritsar, on Saturday evening, bringing temporary relief from the ongoing heatwave but causing disruptions in power supply and traffic.
According to local sources, the weather changed drastically around 5:30 PM, as thick clouds darkened the sky and strong winds swept through the region. Visibility was significantly reduced due to dust storms, followed by intense rain. The storm caused multiple trees to fall along the Kalanaur-Batala road, leading to traffic jams and blockages.
Power supply in several areas was cut off after electric poles were reportedly damaged by high winds. Officials from the power department confirmed that electricity was suspended as a safety measure and would be restored after a damage assessment.
The storm follows several consecutive days of extreme heat in the region, with temperatures soaring and causing widespread discomfort. Authorities are monitoring the situation and assessing damage to infrastructure.
No casualties were reported till the filing of this report.
