Shimla: Tourists and tourism businessmen of the state are disappointed due to lack of snowfall in Himachal. So far in the month of January, there has been 79 percent less rain and snowfall than normal. Due to this, tourists are not able to reach the mountains.
According to the weather department, Western Disturbance (WD) is getting active from tomorrow. Its effect will be visible in the higher altitude areas tomorrow and the day after. The weather will remain clear for two days in the medium altitude and lower areas.
There is a possibility of rain and snowfall in most parts of the state on 31 January and 1 February. At present, due to lack of rain and snowfall, drought-like conditions are developing. Between 1 and 27 January, only 14.7 mm of rain has occurred in the state, whereas the normal rainfall during this period is 70.8 mm.
Tourists are not getting snow
Himachal’s economy depends on apples, agriculture and tourism. These three sectors are facing crisis without snowfall.
Due to drought, apple orchards are falling prey to diseases. Tourists are disappointed due to lack of snowfall and very few are visiting the tourist places of the state. Farmers’ crops are also getting damaged due to drought.
Roshan Verma, a tourism businessman from Kufri, said that snow has not been falling for the last three-four years. This is affecting the tourism business.
Cold wave makes plains colder than Shimla
Due to lack of rain and snowfall, the temperature is rising. The situation is such that the minimum temperature of Shimla has reached 9.6 degrees Celsius, 6 degrees more than normal.
As compared to Shimla, cold wave is prevailing in the plains. Due to this, the mercury of Una has dropped by 0.6 degrees, Hamirpur by 1.3 degrees, Mandi by 2.3 degrees and Bilaspur by 2.0 degrees.
