New Delhi: Former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh emphasized that the Rohit Sharma-led team needs to perform at their highest level in the upcoming third Test at the Gabba to secure victory in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.

After starting their title defense with a commanding 295-run win in Perth, India enters the third Test following a ten-wicket loss in Adelaide, leaving the series tied at 1-1. Harbhajan views the Gabba Test as crucial for India’s chances.

“If we consider this as a three-match series, India needs to win two of them. Their best opportunities will likely arise in Sydney and Melbourne. However, if they can secure a win at the Gabba, they will significantly enhance their chances of winning one of the matches in Melbourne or Sydney,” he stated on Star Sports.

He noted that the close nature of the first two Tests indicates that both teams are capable of bouncing back, highlighting that while Australia has already done so, it may now be India’s turn to regain the upper hand.

Harbhajan also mentioned that the ten-day gap between the first and second Tests may have disrupted India’s momentum. “This series is challenging because both teams have faced losses. Australia may not have anticipated their defeat in Perth, just as India might not have expected their loss in Adelaide. The lengthy break between the two Tests can sometimes hinder momentum, and that seems to have affected India here,” he explained.

The third Test between India and Australia is scheduled to take place in Brisbane on Saturday.
