Jammu: A joint search operation was initiated on Wednesday following reports of a loud explosion-like sound in Surankote town, located in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Officials stated that the explosion is believed to have occurred near an army installation in Surankote. They are currently gathering more information regarding the incident.
In recent months, terrorist activities have surged in the region, particularly after the relatively peaceful Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly elections. In response, security forces—including police and the army—have intensified their operations against terrorists and their supporters.
Most incidents have been reported in Jammu division, affecting districts such as Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, Kathua, Kishtwar, Reasi, and Udhampur, with some attacks targeting unarmed civilians.
On Tuesday, a high-ranking terrorist from Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Junaid Ahmad Bhat, was killed by security forces. Bhat was implicated in the killings of seven civilians in the Gagangir area on October 20, which included six workers from an infrastructure company and a local doctor.
Earlier, on November 2, a grenade attack in a busy market in Srinagar claimed the life of a 42-year-old woman and injured nine others. Police arrested three local suspects who allegedly carried out the attack under the guidance of LeT operatives across the border.
Additionally, on October 24, terrorists attacked an army vehicle in the Botapathri area of Gulmarg, resulting in the deaths of three soldiers and two civilian porters.
In an ongoing crackdown on terrorist networks, police have conducted extensive search operations across the Jammu region, focusing on groups linked to Jaish-e-Muhammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba. Recently, raids were conducted at 56 locations in four districts, leading to numerous arrests and the recovery of incriminating materials, including electronic devices, cash, weapons, and ammunition.
