Jagdambika Pal, the Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) overseeing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, is set to visit Vijayapura, Karnataka, today. His visit comes in response to the controversy surrounding notices issued by the Waqf Board to local farmers regarding their land.
During his time in Vijayapura, Pal will meet with farmers who received these notices, which declare their land as belonging to the Waqf Board. He plans to address the issue of altering land and revenue records to officially recognize the Waqf Board as the property owner.
The visit was prompted by a request from Tejasvi Surya, the BJP National Youth President and MP, who expressed concern over the Waqf Board’s actions towards farmers. Surya stated that Pal’s visit aims to engage with affected farmers, local organizations, and to present their petitions to the JPC.
The situation has sparked a political dispute between the BJP and the Congress-led state government. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently announced that the government had retracted the Waqf Board’s notices to farmers and accused the BJP of politicizing the issue. He emphasized that the decision to withdraw the notices was made as soon as the government became aware of the situation, rather than as a response to BJP protests.
Pal’s visit is expected to stir political activity in Karnataka.
