New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna administered the oath of office to Justice Manmohan as a Supreme Court judge today.

The appointment of Justice Manmohan was confirmed by the Centre on Tuesday, following a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium. Union Minister of State for Law & Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, announced on X that the President, after consulting the Chief Justice of India, appointed Justice Manmohan, who has served as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

The Collegium noted that it recommended Justice Manmohan for this elevation as the Supreme Court currently has only one judge from the Delhi High Court. Justice Manmohan has been a judge at the Delhi High Court since March 2008 and has held the position of Chief Justice since September 29. He ranks second in the overall seniority of High Court judges in India and is the most senior judge on the Delhi High Court bench.

Before his elevation, Justice Manmohan primarily practiced in civil, criminal, constitutional, taxation, arbitration, trademark, and service law in both the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court. He also served as a Senior Panel Advocate for the Union government in both courts.

The Supreme Court Collegium met on November 28, 2024, to discuss potential candidates for the Supreme Court and unanimously recommended Justice Manmohan be appointed. Born on December 17, 1962, in Delhi, he holds a B.A. (Hons.) in History from Hindu College, University of Delhi, and studied at the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University.
