Bengaluru: The Karnataka BJP has heavily criticized the Congress government for a troubling rise in maternal deaths in the state, claiming it now holds the highest rate in the country.
At a press conference in Bengaluru, Opposition Leader R. Ashoka pointed out the stark contrast between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s claims of Karnataka leading in GDP and the grim reality of maternal mortality rates.
Ashoka condemned the government’s attention on organizing events while neglecting the health of mothers and children, stating, “Even if the government holds 100 conventions without saving children, it won’t escape the people’s wrath.” He described the health department as “sick,” citing specific cases like maternal deaths at Ballari Hospital due to intravenous fluid issues. He raised alarm over 111 newborns and 28 mothers who have died in government hospitals over the past ten months, demanding that the government prioritize justice and accountability over financial aid under the Griha Laxmi scheme.
He also admonished Congress leaders for their perceived indifference, recalling their emotional appeals during the Covid-19 pandemic, saying they now focus on political events rather than addressing family losses. Ashoka criticized the government for continuing to purchase substandard medicines despite identifying issues with 28 products, warning that such negligence could lead to greater consequences.
BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra echoed these concerns, questioning the government’s lack of action following tragic incidents, particularly in Ballari. He accused the administration of using intravenous glucose from a blacklisted company, which reportedly contributed to the deaths of several women and infants.
Vijayendra also criticized key ministers for failing to respond to the crisis and took a jab at District In-Charge Minister Zameer Ahmad Khan for focusing on other matters instead of the incident. He stressed that the government must be held responsible for its actions in the wake of this tragedy.
