Sydney: In Sydney on January 4, Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma, who opted out of the ongoing Sydney Test due to his recent poor performance, emphasized the need for younger players to work hard to earn leadership roles in the future.

After scoring just 3, 6, 10, 3, and 9 in the current Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, Rohit stepped down, allowing Jasprit Bumrah to take over as captain. However, Bumrah faced concerns as he left the field during the second session of day two for hospital scans.

Rohit stated, “It’s tough to say. There are many young players, and I want them to grasp the significance of cricket and this position. They should earn the chance to lead by playing hard-fought cricket over the next few years. Leadership is not handed out; it’s earned through effort.”

He acknowledged the talent among the younger players but stressed that being India’s captain comes with immense pressure and responsibility. “It’s a great honor with a heavy burden. They must work for it,” he added.

Discussing Bumrah’s rise as a leading fast bowler and captain, Rohit praised his game intelligence and leadership qualities, noting, “He sets a great example with his bowling and has evolved significantly over the years.”

Reflecting on his own leadership journey, Rohit shared, “In leadership, you must accept that not every day will be good. The ideas I had months ago remain the same, even if results fluctuate. People will judge us, but I won’t change my approach.”

He acknowledged the crowd’s influence in India, stating, “We know we can’t win the series, but we have a chance to draw it and prevent them from winning. A positive result in our third attempt here would be fantastic.”
