Bengaluru: In response to a notice from Karnataka police summoning him for questioning regarding his remarks on the disenfranchisement of Muslims, Vokkaliga seer Chandrashekaranatha Swami declared on Saturday that he is prepared to face jail and has left the matter in God’s hands.
Speaking to the media, the seer said, “I am willing to go to jail if that is what they want. I participated in a pro-farmer protest and spoke out against what I perceive as land grabs by the Waqf Board; however, I cannot go to the police station for questioning. If they come to my mutt, I will clarify my statements.”
The seer described his remarks about Muslims as an “unintentional slip of the tongue,” adding that he expressed regret the following day. He emphasized, “Our Mutt has Muslim devotees as well. I even attend their marriage functions. I don’t understand why a complaint has been filed against me.”
Claiming ignorance of the police notice, he mentioned, “I am not well, and several leaders have supported me. I am not worried about the repercussions.”
He clarified that he has never called for the banning of the Waqf Board but has instead demanded that farmers’ lands be protected, questioning the government’s actions as appeasement toward one community.
The seer criticized what he termed “vote bank politics,” asserting that Muslims should be stripped of their voting rights to end this practice, claiming it impedes the country’s progress.
The Upparpet police have filed an FIR against him based on a complaint alleging that his statements were provocative and could disrupt communal harmony. The situation has taken a significant political turn, with a BJP delegation visiting the seer and warning of “serious consequences” if legal actions are pursued against him. This delegation was led by Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka and former Deputy CM C.N. Ashwath Narayan.
