The Election Commission is conducting these by-polls to fill positions left vacant due to deaths or resignations of local officials.

Spokesperson Nita Pokharel Aryal confirmed to Xinhua news agency that voting has proceeded smoothly at all polling stations. Voters are casting their ballots from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time.

A total of 376 candidates from 20 political parties and independent contenders are vying for the positions. Around 226,799 voters are eligible to elect one mayor, one deputy mayor, two chairpersons, four vice-chairpersons for rural municipalities, and 33 ward chairpersons.

Although 44 vacant positions were initially scheduled for the by-election, three positions were filled unopposed, according to Aryal.
