Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called for the United Nations (UN) to intervene in the ongoing crisis in neighboring Bangladesh. During a session in the state Assembly, she proposed that the central government consider deploying peacekeeping forces in Bangladesh as part of this intervention.
Banerjee expressed her concern over the central government’s silence on the issue for the past ten days, particularly as there are demands from the ruling party to seal borders and halt food supplies. She emphasized, “These are my proposals. I would like the Prime Minister to address the issue and request UN intervention.”
While she stated that the matter of illegal infiltration is primarily the Union government’s responsibility, she reiterated her support for whatever position the central government might take. Her remarks came after a senior official from the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) highlighted the international community’s indifference towards attacks on minority Hindus in Bangladesh, specifically targeting ISKCON monks.
Furthermore, Banerjee mentioned her willingness to provide refuge to people fleeing Bangladesh if the Union government permits it. She also condemned the disrespect shown towards the Indian national flag in Bangladesh and suggested that an Indian representative could be sent to Bangladesh for discussions if deemed necessary by the central government.
