In Jagraon, Ludhiana, a young man committed suicide at his in-laws’ house a year after his love marriage. He had gone to his in-laws’ house to pick up his wife, during which his in-laws abused him, after which he consumed sulphas.
The deceased has been identified as Amninder Singh Poonia. He was a resident of Kothe Poona village. The deceased’s father Parminder Singh said that his son had returned from the UK on April 24. Amninder had a love marriage with a girl from village Rasulpur on July 16, 2024. The girl’s parents were unhappy with the marriage.
When Amninder was in the UK, his daughter-in-law lived with him. But later she went back to her maternal home. The girl’s parents, Lakhvir Kaur and Jagtar Singh, were constantly harassing Amninder.
He had taken his wife to his in-laws’ house on Thursday
On Thursday, when Amninder went to his in-laws’ house to pick up his wife, his in-laws abused him. Distressed by this, he consumed sulphas in front of them. He was immediately taken to a private hospital, where he died.
Case filed against mother-in-law and father-in-law
SI Surjeet Singh of Thana Sadar said that on the complaint of the deceased’s father, a case has been registered against the mother-in-law and father-in-law for forcing the deceased to commit suicide. Both the accused are absconding. The police have sent the body to the government hospital for postmortem and have started investigation.
Happiness before marriage, life did not last even for a year
The son had a love marriage on 16 July 2024. There was an atmosphere of happiness in the whole family that day. The father told that everyone participated wholeheartedly in the son’s wedding. No one had any idea that this wedding would become the story of his death. The marriage did not even complete one year and now the body of the same son will come out of the house from where the wedding procession had started.
The father wept and said that he had adopted his daughter-in-law as his own daughter. He never discriminated against her. But his son’s in-laws never accepted her as their own. His in-laws harassed him so much that he broke down. He saw no other way than death. His son died in front of them.
