Hoshiarpur, June 26: On the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a special awareness campaign was organized in the Hoshiarpur Assembly constituency under the leadership of MLA Brahm Shankar Jimpa and Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain. The event was held with the support of the district administration and saw active participation from the “Nasha Mukti Morcha Team.”
As part of the initiative, a candlelight awareness march was conducted from Ghantaghar Chowk to Maharishi Valmiki Chowk (Sabzi Mandi) at 7 PM. The primary objective of the campaign was to raise awareness among youth and the general public about the harmful effects of drug abuse and to collectively pledge towards building a drug-free society.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Brahm Shankar Jimpa stated that drug abuse is one of the biggest obstacles to societal progress. He emphasized that tackling this menace requires not only strict law enforcement but also active public participation and social awareness. He highlighted that guiding the youth in the right direction forms the strongest foundation for a drug-free society. He also informed the public that the state government and district administration are taking strict action against drug trafficking, but eliminating this social evil completely will require the cooperation of every citizen. He appealed to the public, especially the youth, to actively participate in such awareness drives and contribute to building a drug-free Punjab.
Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain lauded the initiative and described it as an inspiring step towards youth and societal awareness. She stressed that government efforts alone are not sufficient to combat the menace of drug abuse; active involvement from all sections of society is essential. She noted that such candle marches serve as impactful tools for public awareness, especially in sensitizing the youth and guiding them towards a positive path.
The Deputy Commissioner appreciated the efforts of the “Nasha Mukti Morcha Team” and all organizations involved in the event. She emphasized that people struggling with addiction need compassion, guidance, and rehabilitation, and assured that the administration is fully committed to providing all possible support.
Present on the occasion were District Coordinator of Nasha Mukti Morcha Team Satwant Singh Siyan and Kanchan Diyol, who shared their thoughts on the drug issue and appealed to every section of society to come forward and be part of this fight.
Also in attendance were Mayor Surinder Kumar, Deputy Mayor Ranjit Chaudhary, Assistant Commissioner Oaishi Mandal, Chairman of Hoshiarpur Cooperative Bank Vikram Sharma, SP Major Singh, Joint Commissioner of Municipal Corporation Sandeep Tiwari, Councillors Balwinder Bindi, Pradeep Bittu, Vijay Aggarwal, Mohit Saini, and Varinder Dutt Vaid, along with other dignitaries.
