Imphal: On the night of January 4, a mob, including armed individuals, attacked the Superintendent of Police’s office in Kangpokpi district, Manipur, in response to the ongoing deployment of Central forces in the area. Officials reported that multiple police personnel sustained injuries during the incident.

According to a police officer in Imphal, security forces had to use a cane charge and tear gas to disperse the crowd following the attack. Initial reports indicate several injuries among police staff, though further details are still pending.

Witnesses noted that the protesters hurled stones and other objects at the SP office, expressing their frustration over the presence of Central forces in tribal villages. Some vehicles within the SP office compound were also reportedly damaged.

Local media suggested that Kangpokpi SP Manoj Prabhakar, an IPS officer, was injured during the attack, although this has not been officially confirmed. The mob has been demanding the withdrawal of CRPF and BSF personnel from Saibol village, located in both Kangpokpi and Imphal East districts.

The unrest follows protests by various Kuki-Zo organizations against alleged police violence towards tribal women during a December 31 incident in Saibol village.

In related developments, Lt Gen Abhijit S. Pendharkar, GOC of Spear Corps, along with senior military officials, met with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan in Imphal to discuss the current security situation in the state. The officers provided updates on security deployments, particularly in border regions.

A police statement released late Friday noted that a protest rally organized by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) escalated into violence as demonstrators demanded the withdrawal of Central Security Forces from Saibol village. The statement confirmed that the mob attacked the SP’s office with stones and petrol bombs. In response, security forces utilized necessary measures to regain control of the situation. SP Manoj Prabhakar received medical attention and is reportedly doing well, currently leading joint security efforts in the area.

Significant security reinforcements have been deployed, and the situation is now under control and being closely monitored.
