Bhopal: Chief Minister Mohan Yadav inaugurated the Ratapani Tiger Reserve in Raisen district, near Bhopal, on Friday. This event came just over a week after the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change officially designated the Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary as a tiger reserve.

The inauguration was marked by a cycle rally that saw participation from various individuals, including Bollywood actor Randeep Hooda.

With this addition, Madhya Pradesh now boasts eight tiger reserves, joining Kanha, Satpura, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Sanjay Dubri, Panna, and Veerangana Durgavati. The number is expected to rise further as the Centre has also approved the designation of Madhav National Park (MNP) in the Gwalior-Chambal region.

CM Yadav expressed pride in Bhopal being the only state capital in the country to host a tiger reserve and congratulated the city’s residents on this achievement. He noted that villages within the Ratapani sanctuary have been placed in the buffer zone rather than the core area to reduce any inconvenience.

The Chief Minister highlighted that the establishment of the tiger reserve would enhance Ratapani and Bhopal’s international profile as the Tiger Capital, promoting tourism and creating employment opportunities while aiding in the conservation of forests, tigers, and other wildlife.

According to a government statement, the Ratapani Tiger Reserve comprises a core area of 763.812 square kilometers and a buffer area of 507.653 square kilometers. Nine villages located within the tiger reserve are not included in the core area as per the sanctuary notification, ensuring that the villagers’ rights remain unchanged.
