Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurpurab, is a significant festival that celebrates the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first guru of Sikhism and the founder of the faith. This day is marked by deep devotion, spiritual gatherings, and the recitation of hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism. It is celebrated annually on the full moon day of the Kartik month, known as Kartik Purnima, and is also referred to as Parkash Utsav.
Guru Nanak Dev, who was devoted to the Divine from a young age, was a proponent of peace, equality, and tolerance throughout his life. He was born in 1469 in Rai Bhoi di Talwandi, now Nankana Sahib, near Lahore, Pakistan. On Gurpurab, prayers are conducted in Gurdwaras throughout the day, culminating in a communal meal known as langar that continues into the night.
