New York: Defending champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia has reached the third round of the US Open. Djokovic got a walkover in the second-round match played on Wednesday night. In the second round, Laslo Djere of Serbia retired due to injury. Djokovic won this match 6-4, 6-4, 2-0.
This was Djokovic’s 90th win in the US Open. With this win, Djokovic has become the first tennis player to win more than 90 matches in all four Grand Slams.
24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic will face 28th seed Alexei Popyrin in the fourth round on Friday. Djere was the only player to win a set against Djokovic at the US Open last year. Djokovic defeated Radu Albot of Moldova 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 in the first round.
Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova was knocked out of the US Open in the second round after losing to Elena Gabriela Ruse 4-6, 5-7. Eighth seed Krejcikova had not played any match after the Paris Olympics. Ruse will now face 26th seed Paula Badosa. Badosa defeated America’s Taylor Townsend 6-3, 7-5. In men’s singles, Francis Tiafoe defeated Alexander Shevchenko 6-4, 6-2, 1-0. Now Tiafoe will face Ben Shelton. 13th seed Shelton defeated Roberto Bautista Agut 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
