New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the government-run Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has not only empowered small businesses but also transformed the e-commerce landscape in India. Launched in 2021, ONDC comprises over 200 apps for buyers and sellers, aiming to democratize the e-commerce sector.

In a social media post, PM Modi highlighted the network’s contributions to fostering growth and prosperity in the country. He echoed comments from Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, who pointed out that ONDC has fundamentally changed India’s e-commerce dynamics by connecting sellers and buyers effectively.

Goyal emphasized that ONDC has created a “robust and inclusive digital marketplace” and has achieved significant milestones over the past year, particularly benefiting small enterprises by ensuring a level playing field within the network.

Since its establishment, ONDC has facilitated over 150 million transactions and established more than 200 networks. It boasts over 700,000 sellers and service providers, with participants from over 600 cities and towns, and consumers spanning more than 1,100 locations.

Importantly, over 7,000 farmer-producer organizations have joined the platform, representing 3.5 million farmers. Additionally, around 50% of the participants in the MSME Trade Enablement and Marketing Initiative (MSME-TEAM), which aims to support 500,000 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, are women-owned businesses.
