Islamabad: On January 1, the Pakistani government announced an increase in petrol and diesel prices, as confirmed by media reports. Late on December 31, a notification revealed that petrol prices have risen by 56 paise per litre, setting the new price at Rs252.66 per litre. High-speed diesel also saw a price increase of Rs2.96 per litre, now costing Rs258.34 per litre.

These adjustments are part of the routine price revisions driven by both international market trends and local economic factors. Previously, on December 15, petrol prices had remained unchanged at Rs252.10 per litre, while high-speed diesel had decreased by Rs3.05 per litre to Rs255.38. Additionally, kerosene prices fell by Rs3.32 to Rs161.66 per litre, and light diesel oil was reduced by Rs2.78 to Rs148.95 per litre.

The new prices, effective starting at midnight Wednesday, reflect the government’s challenges in managing the petroleum levy. Over the last month and a half, overall petroleum prices have surged by Rs12.14 per litre. Specifically, since October 16, high-speed diesel prices have increased by Rs12.14 per litre, and petrol prices have risen by Rs5.07 per litre. Sources indicated that although the government could have lowered the levy to mitigate these increases, restrictions imposed by the IMF program limited this option.
