Assam: Parents of imprisoned ‘Waris Punjab De’ activist Amritpal Singh arrived in Dibrugarh on Saturday to visit him after he won the parliamentary seat for Punjab’s Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency in the recently concluded elections.

Tarsem Singh and Balwinder Kaur, his father and mother, were welcomed at the airport by Amritpal’s wife Kirandeep Kaur, who has been staying in Dibrugarh since June 5th. They proceeded to the Dibrugarh Central Jail to meet their son, who has been detained there since March 2023.

Expressing their joy over their son’s electoral victory, Tarsem Singh stated, “We are very happy that our son has won the elections. We have come to meet him so that he will also feel happy that people love him and elected him by such a huge margin.”

Meanwhile, Amritpal’s mother distributed sweets to the jail staff and also brought new clothes and shoes for her son, anticipating his oath-taking ceremony as an MP.

Amritpal’s wife was accompanied by advocate and former Punjab MP Rajdeo Singh Khalsa, who assured that all necessary legal measures are being taken to secure Amritpal’s release.

Amritpal secured the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat as an independent candidate, defeating Congress’s Kulbir Singh Zira and AAP’s Laljit Singh Bhullar.

Khalsa alleged that Amritpal’s arrest was politically motivated, orchestrated by the AAP government in Punjab to further their agenda. He argued that the arrest was unconstitutional and unlawful.
