Washington: A rally took place outside the White House on Sunday, where numerous supporters called for justice for Ukraine following a tense meeting last week between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump. The crowd waved Ukrainian flags and chanted pro-Ukraine slogans, expressing their outrage over the abrupt end to Zelenskyy’s visit, during which he was asked to leave the Oval Office.

One woman at the rally stated, “I am here because Ukraine has been a loyal ally. They gave up their nuclear weapons at our urging, which made them vulnerable to an aggressive enemy. They were attacked without provocation, and we have stood by them until recently. Our behavior is disgraceful. I want to show my support and demonstrate that the character of the American people hasn’t changed. After the meeting with Zelenskyy, I have never felt so embarrassed to be an American.”

A Ukrainian citizen present at the rally expressed gratitude towards Americans for their support, especially in light of the Oval Office meeting. She emphasized the importance of continued U.S. and European support for Ukraine to achieve lasting peace, warning that without security guarantees, Russia could rearm and invade again, undermining peace negotiations. She added, “We need peace more than anyone, as we have lost so many lives, and we don’t want to lose more. We want our children and POWs to return home, and then there can be peace.”

The future of U.S. support for Ukraine appears uncertain after the inconclusive meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump. Supporters of Trump, however, have a different perspective, viewing the encounter as a necessary assertion of American power towards what they consider an ungrateful ally. One Trump supporter remarked, “I agree with Trump. Ukrainians have been bullying us, using the fear of Putin to gain sympathy. We have Americans struggling with benefits and jobs while we fund pensions in Ukraine. Ukrainians in America often live better than many other Americans. I believe Trump handled the situation as he should have.”

Meanwhile, during a summit in London, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer informed reporters that he was collaborating with France and other nations to develop a plan to halt the fighting, which would be presented to Trump. Zelenskyy, in turn, expressed strong appreciation for the support Ukraine has received during a European leaders summit focused on Ukraine’s future and its relationship with Europe.
