New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who recently won the Lok Sabha bypoll for Kerala’s Wayanad, is set to take her oath as a Member of Parliament today.
With this, she will join her brother Rahul Gandhi and mother Sonia Gandhi in Parliament. The Wayanad seat was vacated by Rahul after he secured victories in both Wayanad and Rae Bareli, choosing to retain the latter and allowing Priyanka to contest from Wayanad.
Priyanka won the seat with an impressive margin of 410,931 votes, surpassing Rahul Gandhi’s previous victory margin in the Lok Sabha elections. This marks the first time that three members of the Gandhi family will serve in Parliament simultaneously.
Additionally, she will be part of a group of MPs who have at least one family member serving in either House of Parliament. Sonia Gandhi was elected to the Rajya Sabha after opting not to run in the 2024 general elections from Rae Bareli.
On Wednesday, Congress leaders from Wayanad presented Priyanka with her election certificate in the national capital, extending their best wishes. Photos shared by the party captured Rahul Gandhi celebrating the occasion by offering sweets to his sister after she received the certificate.
After receiving her election certificate, Priyanka expressed gratitude on her X handle, calling it a symbol of love, trust, and shared values. “My colleagues from Wayanad brought my certificate of election today. For me, it is not just a document; it is a symbol of your love, trust, and the values we are committed to. Thank you, Wayanad, for choosing me to carry forward this journey towards a better future for yourselves,” she wrote.
This marks Priyanka’s electoral debut, 20 years after she campaigned for Sonia in Rae Bareli and Rahul in Amethi during the 2004 Lok Sabha elections.
Alongside Priyanka, Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan will also take the oath, having won the Nanded Lok Sabha seat in a by-election with 586,788 votes, necessitated by the passing of the former Congress MP, Vasantrao Balwantrao Chavan.
